Indian Block Printing and Indigo Dyeing

$300.00

Instructor: Trisha Gupta

Date: Sunday & Monday, October 12 and 13, 2025
Time: 10am - 4pm both days

Workshop Description:
Have you ever looked at Indian Saris and wondered how they were made? The intricate patterns and the signature colors were developed through the use of organic dyes and hours of craftsmanship. In this class, we will cover both topics and break these classic processes down into steps. Participants will learn the history and practical application, and create a textile piece with indigo print paste. Using brushes and hand detailing, you can add blue to your design, set, and oxidize it. At the end of day one, you will have a block-printed piece made with Indigo dyes. In the second part of the workshop, we will discuss carving and how Indian block printing differs from other carving forms. We will work with hand tools and carve our block from balsa wood. We will seal these and test print them at the end of the second day.

We will also cover motifs and design a block for yardage.
